According to Tibetan Bon tradition, this year March 13th is the first full moon of the lunar calendar.

The first full moon (Purnima) of the year marks the birth of the founder of Bon, Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche. Commemorating this date with a special blessing ceremony has been an unbroken tradition over the past 18,000 years throughout Zhang Zhung and Tibet.

In 1970, the current Buddha of Bon, the Gyalwa Menri 33rd Abbot of Menri, held the first historical celebration of Tonpa Shenrab’s birth outside Zhang Zhung and Tibet. The ceremony took place at Menri Monastery in northern India, and this event remains a special annual tradition at Menri to this day.

Over the years, many scholars had proposed differing systems for determining the month and year of Tonpa Shenrab’s birth. Finally, the 23rd Abbot of Menri and leader of Bon, His Holiness Gyalwa Menri Trizin Khenchen Nyima Tenzin (1813-1862), officially set the date for recognizing Tonpa Shenrab’s birth as the full moon of the first month of the lunar calendar. From that time forward, the full moon ceremony for Tonpa Shenrab has been continuously celebrated at Menri Monastery in Tibet and Tibetan Bon monasteries throughout the world.

This year, the full moon day falls on March 13, 2017, however we will hold our celebration the day before, on Sunday, March 12th. Bon Shen Ling will perform the full moon or Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche birthday commemoration celebration prayer and candle lighting ceremony with a blessing at the temple in Queens, New York City.
